Students are introduced to the fundamental social concepts, cultural characteristics, and political institutions of ancient Roman society. Examples of topics that may be covered are the family, religion, slavery, social relations, cultural ideals as reflected in ancient literature and art, and political organization of the Republic and the Empire. Major sources of information are presented, and the problems involved in the interpretation of ancient evidence are addressed throughout.
