Topics to be covered include bonding; hybridization; resonance; acids and bases; the structure, nomenclature, synthesis and reactions of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, ethers and amines; the stereo chemistry of organic compounds; and nucleophilic substitution and elimination reactions and their use in organic synthesis. The laboratory includes an introduction to techniques commonly used in organic chemistry, through the preparation, purification and characterization of organic compounds. Note: CHEM-1111 may be used as a corequisite provided a minimum grade of 75 or equivalent was obtained in Chemistry 40S. Restrictions: Students may not hold credit for this course and CHEM-2201.
